*tips fedora and scratches neckbeard*

okay so its like June 2020. Windows 10 breaks on me for the second time. I use this as an excuse to install Linux Mint.

With the exception of a few choice pieces of software I needed to run on Windows (most of what I throw at wine works), I haven't really looked back. I think the biggest difference that stood out for me was the operating system not trying to actively fight you; my biggest nitpick with Windows 10 was it's nagging instance on installing updates, even when it was least convenient. Yeah, there were third-party work arounds, but I found these broke more often than not.

and come on. I shouldn't have to wrestle with my computer over that.

Windows 10's mobile like ecosystem had made me forgotten what it was like to use an operating system that didn't make me log into an internet connected account, or didn't try to push all these dumb features in my face, or didn't display targetted advertisements, or actually use an operating system that didn't try and actively stop me from changing it to my liking.

Don't even get me started on how simple the apt package manager is. It was weird at first, but honestly? I think its my preferred method of installing software now.

While I can see why people still use Windows (especially in enterprise settings), I think what I don't get is why more casual users don't use Linux; almost everything is done online nowadays, and as long as you're not trying to make under the hood changes without knowing what you're doing, its hard to screw up. Out-of-box driver support for the distro I use was also really, really good (better than it was 10 years ago anyways). Regardless, I understand why Windows works for a lot of people, especially developers or more tech savy people; large program library, years upon years of support, depending on what you're trying to do theres arguably less wrestling with the system.

Sorry if I come off as a bit of a neckbeard, but god I love Linux Mint. If you're fed up with Windows, I heavily recommend giving it a shot; almost all of Windows' keyboard shortcuts work on the default desktop, and the UI is near identical too. Game support isn't too shabby either; Steam has it's own variant of Wine with great compatibility, and Lutris is a great multi-purpose launcher for games. From my personal experience, GTA V ran fairly close to how it did on Windows. That being said, games with Easy Anti-Cheat (like Fortnite) don't work unfortunately.

TL;DR: linux mint is great, fuck microsoft.

I actually tried installing Linux Mint because of this post (and because I wanted to try out Linux anyways).
Keep in mind I've only actually used it for about 30mins at this point so take this with a grain of salt.
Do I think the average computer user should use Linux over Windows? Realistically, no, not really. It provides a lot of extra control (which is great), but also comes with the need to learn a whole new file directory system, as well as a lot of troubleshooting (both to get through the installation if you have windows 10 installed, and once you have it installed proper). If you're the type that's cool with the extra work that comes with it, and are likely to take advantage of the extra control, then it's great. But I don't think that's gonna apply to most people.

Tl;Dr: Linux Mint is a better product than Windows 10, but I don't think it's for most people.
