→ Wireless is the fastest growing telecom industry today
→ There is supposedly one hotspot for every 15 humans.
→ The number of IoT devices around the globe is around 35 billion.
What is attractive about wireless?
Convenience
Affordability
Mobility
Productivity
→ Deployment advantages: installation flexibility, speed, scalability.
→ Regions without or with limited wired infratstructure can easily establish wireless communication
→ Wireless networks have a better chance of surviving disasters
What is wireless communications?
→ Process of transmitting information int he form of electromagnetic waves in free space at certain frequencies.
→ Frequencies are measured in Hertz (1 Hz = 1 cycle per second)
[Audible sound: 20Hz-20KHz] (not an EM wave, here for comparison)
[20 KHZ - 300 GHz] radio frequencies
[300 GHz -] infrared, visible light, xrays, gamma rays...
all Wireless services: [800 KHz - 5 GHz]
(recently expanded to 6G)
There is a direct correlation between bandwitdth and frequency. Higher freq = higher bandwidth.
However, if you push the frequency too high, the hardware requirements are larger and the range is smaller.
Wireless technology based on range:
^
Nano - microsensors in materials and bodies
BAN - body area network
PAN - personal area network
LAN - local
CAN - campus
MAN - metropolitan
RAN - radio access network
WAN - wide area network Index
