hi lorum users welcome to "me talking about songs and albums that i have discovered or rediscovered recently and am currently obsessed with"
i'll probably do one of these every couple months or so also these are in no particular order or anything
number one: "dead star" by king buffalo
king buffalo is a new york based heavy psychedelic rock trio... from outer space
i haven't fully listened to any of their albums yet, but i've recently been obsessed with their "dead star" EP!
this project is pretty short at only 35 minutes split across five tracks, but its spacey and psychedelic nature sucks you in to its world and gets you lost amidst the stars
half of the EP's runtime is taken up by the sixteen minute epic "red star, pt. 1 & 2". part one is a long slow build up dominated by eerie synths and vocals that sound like their echoing through the galaxy. part two picks up the pace and becomes much heavier as the guitars and drums take over the synths. the last two lines "nothing to lose but the weight of the chains / burn the castle down down down" are brought to life as the song enters its climax and really sounds like some great monument is being destroyed
the song "ecliptic" is also very synth heavy and sorta has that 80s 'stranger things' vibe
"eta carinae" which i've linked above is the song i've been listening to the most from "dead star". it's the most straight forward heavy psych song and has some absolutely killer drum work. check it out!!
number two: "bad cowboy" by days on parade
days on parade is a new psychedelic rock outfit from ontario that i found because i am mutuals with a friend of theirs on twitter lol
*edit 11/2/23: turns out i am also mutuals with the vocalist on twitter and i didn't realize LOL
they only have one song out so far called "bad cowboy" but it absolutely rips. this live version is great but i especially love the tone and the amount of fuzz they get on the studio version. i also love the vocals and especially the bass, that dude is my new hero lol
number three: "o.n.e." by king gizzard and the lizard wizard
okay i have to sneak at least a bit of gizz in here
obviously the band is my ongoing obsession but the song by them that i'm listening to the most recently is "o.n.e." from their 17th album "l.w."
for some reason this song kinda slipped under my radar for a while (it happens when you have a band with this many albums lol) but i've recently rediscovered it and it's one of my favourite microtonal king gizzard songs right now. in a sea of seven, eight, ten, fifteen minute king gizzard songs, "o.n.e." stands out as short and sweet
i love the mellow and calm intro with ambrose wailing on the harmonica (the extended version of which is a highlight of the "live at red rocks '22" album that came out last month), and i will never not get goosebumps during the drop around 2/3rds into the song where the song cuts to just joey shredding on the guitar until it all comes crashing in again
this live version from melbourne in 2021 doesn't really have the mellow intro but it absolutely shreds. gizz usually sounds better live anyways
number last one for today: "sticky hulks" by thee oh sees
thee oh sees (or oh sees or osees or whatever they wanna call themselves idk its confusing) are quickly becoming my second favourite band, behind king gizzard. they've got so many albums and i've been listening to a bunch of them but my favourite song of theirs right now definitely has to be "sticky hulks" from their album "mutilator defeated at last"
(thee oh sees are another one of those bands that are just at their best live)
i love the organ-like synth that feels right out of a JRPG, in fact the whole song really feels straight out of a fantasy world to me. this is especially due to john dwyer's vocals, he really sounds like some sort of ancient creature that speaks in riddles, telling you stories of endless wars and dark lords that you aren't sure if you really believe but you sure are listening intently.
especially in the live version, when the organ isn't singing the guitar is shrieking and roaring like a giant beast freshly released from hell to wreak havoc on the land. just an awesome song
okay that's it for now! thanks for reading, hopefully i'll be back with more in a month or two!
